C COMPANY MEMORIAL HOUSE OPENING
November 14-16, 2014
Honouring the sacrifices of our returned servicemen went to new heights with the opening of the C Company Memorial House in Gisborne this weekend.
Located next to the Tairawhiti Museum, the house is a significant memorial and recognition of "Nga Kaupoi" - the 28th Maori Battalion soldiers of the East Coast district.
A special memorial parade through town took place prior to the opening on Saturday and was a starring feature of the weekend.
The parade began at Te Poho o Rawiri Marae and made its way through town to the Wi Pere monument for a wreath laying ceremony, before continuing on to the new house.
Taking pride of place at the front of the march was a group of 60 young men dressed in WWI replica uniforms to re-enact the day the first group of Tairawhiti Maori soldiers left for war 100 years ago.
The group of local men were civilians, many school-aged, who underwent drills and training over the past few weeks.
The party included a number of young Ngati Oneone tama as well as representatives from all of the hapu and iwi in Tairawhiti.
Te Poho o Rawiri Marae was a hub for the auspicious occasion, hosting more than 2000 manuhiri (visitors) over the weekend.
The marae was the venue for Friday's main pohiri, the starting point for the parade and held a special church service on Sunday.
The Pa also hosted a ki-o-rahi sports tournament on Saturday afternoon, which was played in recognition of a game demonstrated by the 28th Maori Battalion soldiers during the WWII campaign in Europe.
It was an amazing and emotionally inspiring weekend for all involved, that could have only happened thanks to the many whanau who helped towards the occasion.
